Emotion Regulation and Distress Tolerance (DBT)

Riding the Emotional Rollercoaster: How DBT Skills Can Change Your Life

Do you feel things more intensely than other people seem to? Does it feel like your emotions go from 0 to 100 in seconds, and it takes hours to come back down? Do intense emotions sabotage your relationships or lead to impulsive behaviors you later regret?

If this resonates, you aren't "broken." You might just need a different set of skills to navigate your emotional world.

This is where Dialectical Behavior Therapy (DBT) shines. Originally developed to treat Borderline Personality Disorder, DBT has proven incredibly effective for anyone struggling with emotion dysregulation, self-harm urges, or chronic suicidal ideation.

The "Dialectic": Acceptance AND Change

The core philosophy of DBT rests on a "dialectic"—the idea that two seemingly opposite things can be true at the same time.

In therapy, the main dialectic is: We accept you exactly as you are right now, AND we know you need to change to build the life you want.

Many clients find this deeply validating. We understand that your current behaviors (even the destructive ones) are currently your best attempt to cope with unbearable pain. We don't judge them, but we work together to replace them with better tools.
